ロスタイムで追いついてるんだし、ハル戦に勝ってれば「こんな試合もあるよな」で終わりなんだけど。3ポイント取りにもうちょい攻撃的に行ってもいいんじゃなかろうか。サンダランドがあそこまで守備的に来るとは思わなかったんだろうけどさ。今忙しいのでレポートは後で。

アーセン・ヴェンゲル監督：「ポゼッションはしていたが、キレを欠いていた」
- 試合について
彼らはわれわれにボールを渡し、「おい、聞いてくれ。俺たちは引き分けで充分だから、後はあんたらのやりたいようにやってくれよ」と言ってきたわけだ。0−0でなかったことを除けば、基本的に試合はこの筋書き通りに終わった。サンダランドは勝利を手中に収めてかけていたがね。ポゼッション自体はわれわれが完全に握っていたが、彼らもよく守っていたよ。ゴールのチャンスはあまりなかったのだが、やっとのことで決めた一点は認められなかった。逆に、サンダランドはほとんどなかったシュートのうち一つを決めた。最終的には１ポイントのために多大な底力を発揮せねばならなかった。良い１ポイントか否か？それはわからない。苛立たし一日だったのは確かだ。サンダランドが堅い守備を敷いていたにせよ、普段のようにチャンスを多く作ることはできなかったからね。
Well they gave us the ball and they said 'listen, we are happy with the 0-0, do what you want'. Basically the story of the game was that they did not only get the 0-0 but they almost won the game. We had a lot of possession but lacked a bit of sharpness to get them out of position and they defended very well. And on one of the rare occasions where we could score a goal the ball was given out. On the other hand, with one of the rare shots on goals they had, they scored. In the end we needed character to come back and at least get a point. Is it a good point or a point? I don't know. But it was a bit of a frustrating day for us, we didn't create the chances we usually do and as well because I must say Sunderland defended very well.

Well from the bench my neck is not tall enough to see if the ball was really out or not. Theo pretends that the ball was in, I would love to believe him of course but anyway it doesn't change anything now, it has not been given.

要するにビデオによるアピールが必要だというだ。今は不可能だが、監督であれば一試合に二回はそういう機会があるものだ。もちろん、今回も可能であれば使いたかったよ。
That's just another appeal for video. You cannot appeal on video but if a manager had two appeals per game then in this one I would have used it of course.
- フェアな結果だろうか
一つの結果であって、フェアか否かは見る人によって違うだろう。ポゼッションと主導権はわれわれにあったが、サンダランドはガッツ溢れる守備を敷いて、攻められても攻められてもへこたれなかった。主導権を握ったチームが結果を得るというのがしごく当然であると思うが、常にそうはならないのがフットボール。相手をひきずり出すにはこちらもキレを欠いていた。
It was a result. It depends what you call fair. If you take the possession and the initiative it was all us, but they defended with a great spirit and they were resilient for the whole game. I like to think the team who takes the initiative is rewarded but it's not always like that in football. We lacked a little bit of sharpness to pull them out of position.

I believe it is down to the quality of their defending, they just focused on that. They never came out of position. Secondly, sometimes after a Champions League match we are very sharp or a little bit flat. Today we were a bit flat.

It shows he is just not a great footballer but a great winner. He is one of the smaller players in our team and he goes for the header in the last seconds of the match, it tells you a lot about him.

Because he is a bit young and because we have a captain.

Yes, they used all their experience - Dwight Yorke - to slow us down. You could see that we have quality but sometimes you play a draw in these kind of games. It can happen.

They congest the middle of the park and we wanted to use a bit more of the flanks. We finished with a 4-4-2 in the last 25 minutes and we looked more dangerus because it suits us a bit more. But it is always difficult to rate whether it was because we were a bit tired or because of the shape. It's difficult to know.

I said 'well done' to all the players, I thought we were outstanding. There were lots of positives, I can't think of many negatives. We had good discipline, good shape, we did some good stuff and we defended well.

We have drawn against one of the top four teams in the league and we matched them today. None of our players should feel disappointed, they should be delighted, they played very well. I'm not disappointed that we conceded in stoppage time. The game is not over until the final whistle, anything can happen late on. We knew after Grant's goal that they would come at us and we knew there was a long way to go.

We just couldn't do it at the end, the corner goes in, they had plenty of bodies in the box and they are a big, strong team. It ends up with Fabregas scoring - one of the smallest players on the pitch, that's the way it goes sometimes. We'll learn from it, we are making progress, we played with a good shape and mentality today. You are tempted to have a go at Arsenal but you have to keep your shape, Yorkie came in and gave us good shape. The likes of Djib [Cisse] are getting stronger; we are looking more like a team.

We played Arsenal last year and we attacked, we played 4-4-2 against [Manchester] United and we were beaten 4-0, it could have been seven. We have to get the balance right against these top teams. I don't think we were too defensive, we got in some good areas and there were some good opportunities. We have eight points from seven games and we've had a fairly tough start, I'm pretty happy with that return.
