Colosseum
His diary on September 19th reads, gIn the morning, Terumaro Kato and
Chiyomatsu Ishikawa came to see me, learning of my return to the city. Went to
Colosseum together.h Colosseum was located at Muellerstrasse 42 at the time.
However, you do not see a single trace of the theatre, and an insipid office
building stands on the address at the furthermost end from the street. Although
there is a street called Kolosseumstrasse nearby, it only got its name around
1875 after the pub, Kolosseum, which was opened by Franz Kol in 1872, according
to the book written by Dollinger. This pub seemed to have had a small stage for
entertainment, but it is not clear if this is the theatre that Ogai visited.
Since this street intersects Muellerstrasse, there might have been a house
number reallocation and this pub may be indeed the very place.
Ogai's diary
reads, "It's not worth watching. Simply bizarre." In spite of that, he
repeatedly watched it. The Chinese character, "Sho", means an actress and ,"Yu",
an actor. It might have been the gays that appealed to Ogai as they were
catching attention at that time. The coliseum may have been a musical cafe (cafe
conseil) which later turned to a music hall. When we look at old pictures many
cafes are found in still attractive buildings. They used to be calm places where
people gathered. During the transition period from the end of nineteenth century
to the beginning of twentieth century, Munich used to be the center of arts in
Germany and novelists, musicians, and intellectuals got together at various
cafes in Schwabing area surrounding Englischer Garten (English Garden). Thomas
Mann and Lenin were not yet the central figures. Wilhelm II with his bad taste
oppressed artists (?), while patronizing court poets and painters. Severe
criticism of Nietzsche who opposed to materialistic idea and influence of the
festival, Fasching, which brought an opportunity of artistic renaissance to
"liberate people from daily routine and provide a new perspective" led to the
birth of Brecht. The time was in the preliminary stage which continued to the
Elf Scharfrichter (Eleven Hangmen) and, then, opening of cabaret, after going
through the antiestablishment movement by the liberal journal, Simplicissimus.
Ogai may have got interested, already catching the signs of the time to come.
