Editor's report to authors

Ms 92 784

This ms contains some interesting data that probably warrant publication in ** J. ***. The presentation of the ms however is rather poor and the authors must spend some time improving it, following all the suggestions, marked in pencil on the 2nd copy of the ms, which are not necessarily exhaustive. Submission of an improved ms will permit a better appraisal of the work and make possible a definite decision on whether the ms can be accepted for publication in the Journal.

Regeree's report to authors

The paper by *** and colleagues is a convincing and elegant demonstration of the inhibitory effects of caffeine and related methylxanthine compounds on chloride currents evoked by glycine, in dissociated hippocampal neurones. Their evidence suggests that these compounds act exclusively on the strychnine-sensitive binding site and do not appear to involve a second mbssenger system.

The work is technically superb in my view, being of both academic and pharmaceutical interest and warrants publication in the *** Journal of ***. I have no major criticism or comment on the scientific method or results. There are, however, numerous minor comrnents pencilled-in on the manuscript to which the author's attention is drawn . These are largely typographical errors and suggestions for stylistic and grarnmatical changes which I hope will help the readability of their paper.
