Editor's report Ms ****, revised This Ms is now basically acceptable, but the style is at times deficient. The one remaining scientific problem concerns the interpretation of Fig. 3B. It is suggested (pp. 11 and 19) that the response decrease is due to washout. However at the same time new figures (particularly Fig. 7) dearly show that a similar decline can be observed in nystatin recordings due to desensitization. Ruling out desensitization in the case of Fig. 3B would require a rigorous statistical test based on a quantitative assessment of the response decline. Since such an analysis clearly falls outside the scope of the present work, it is far simpler to just delete the incriminated paragraphs as indicated on the Ms. Other suggestions for stylistic changes have similarly been included in the attached Ms.
